This collaboration will help define barriers to using these data and implement high-impact activities that will put NASA data at the forefront of policy decisions and dramatically broaden the use of NASA Earth Science data in communities outside of the NASA research community. NASA's Understanding Needs to Broaden Outside Use of NASA Data (UNBOUND) project employs a series of coordinated domain-specific workshops designed to match influential analysis and visualization practitioners in target communities with NASA data scientists and others knowledgeable in the field. Often, major improvements in broadening the impact of NASA data can be made by simply making these data more accessible and useable in the context of specific user communities. This is especially true in communities that are not already part of the core NASA user community. The expedition is part of the Spaceward Bound pilot program, which challenges teachers to design and implement real field research.NASA data are the most comprehensive and accurate resource for addressing many of the most important global issues, but these data often aren't used to their full potential. NASA is taking teachers to a barren desert in Chile to help inspire the next generation of explorers. NASA Sends Explorer School Teachers 'Spaceward Bound'. Spaceward Bound, Planning Analog Field Research Expeditions. 2007, crewmembers conducted four two-week training and research expeditions at the Mars Desert Research Station as part of NASA's Spaceward Bound project. On March 25-30, 2007, NASA's Spaceward Bound project at the agency's Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., will take a team of NASA scientists and 40 teachers from throughout the country to study the unique geologic formations of California's Mojave Desert and the supremely adapted microbes that call it home.Ĭramped quarters, stuffy space suits, long working hours and hard research are what 24 intrepid explorers expect in the high deserts of Utah. In March 2007, NASA scientists and teachers stepped back in time as they investigated the Mojave Desert to study the unique geologic formations and the supremely adapted microbes that call it home. The focus of Spaceward Bound is to train the next generation of space explorers by having students and teachers participate in the exploration of scientifically interesting but remote and extreme environments on Earth as analogs for human exploration of the moon and Mars. ![]() Spaceward Bound is an educational program organized at NASA Ames in partnership with The Mars Society, and funded by the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters. ![]()
